Call It Grey or Gray!

Call it Gray Or Grey!

I call it grey now! But on my Pinterest board I call it gray. Grey has been the most popular colour paint for the recent years - actually for decades especially in Scandinavia. In the north we love grey. I’ve been wondering why, but perhaps it’s because it is so neutral and don’t steel the attention from winter’s snowy whites and summer’s shades of greens. Well, it’s quite grey outside no matter what the season is. Anyways, grey is not a boring colour at all.

Grey is both chic and neutral.  So, it’s super easy to decorate with.  It goes with almost everything.  It’s the new neutral.  Years ago, it was beige, but grey has made it greige - a kind of mixture of these two tones..  Most homeowners, especially those that focus on style, opt for the trendier and more stylish gray. We tend to think that grey is always a cool colour, but there are plenty of different hues of grey. That actually makes it rather difficult to pick up the right one. Even though grey is neutral, there are warm tones and cool tones.

Cool and Warm

Cooler tones include blues, greens, light purples (or mixtures of that include these undertones).  They are more soothing and calming.  They remind us of the sky and water.  Cooler tones tend to recede and hence make spaces look larger.

Warmer tones are made with oranges, yellows and reds.  They remind us of heat and the sun.  They tend to make rooms cozier and more intimate.  They tend to make spaces look smaller.

Pick Up Your Grey

Choosing the paint shade is one of the most common fears among people. Most homeowners don’t have experience or confidence in selecting the right shade. If you walk into a home and you’re super impressed with the paint colour selection, chances are that they had a design expert assist them in the process.

As a general rule, going lighter grey (rather than darker) tends to look better.  It gives a fresh and airy look without making your space look too dark. Always ask for samples to test the colors in your own home, because the paint can look different on the walls than on the paint swatch and it can look different in different lighting, and different times of the day and on different walls, so definitely test using the samplers.

Basic Greys From Poli-Farbe

Poli-Farbe is a Hungarian family-owned paint company. They want to invest in the future, protecting the environment, creating jobs and encourage everyone to create a beautiful home.

LISZTES URÖM ‘floury wormwood’ is a light grey. It has a warm tone.  It goes really well with dark hardwood floors and almost all types of furniture. It has several coordinating darker greys that are great for accent walls

EZÜSTFA ‘silverberry’ is probably the most popular grey.  It’s a light cool grey, with slightly blue undertones and it’s exquisite. This shade is pretty much a pure grey.  Very calming and relaxing hue.

SULYOM ‘water chestnut’ is a tad darker than the previous grey. It has some aqua and blue undertones reminds me of stormy sea.

HAMVASKA ‘burnt ash’ is a grey with brown undertones (and some very subtle yellow undertones).  It works well when your room has a mixture of greys and browns.  It has some brown and yellow undertones, so I would call this greige.

How To Decorate A Small City Balcony?

Decorate A Tiny City Balcony

Summer is just around the corner! It’s the time of the year when we all want to be outside and enjoy the sunshine and warm weather. If you are longing for a garden oasis but lacking a backyard to turn into a dream oasis, no worries. Even a tiny balcony can be turned into a lush retreat with the right tricks. Nothing beats that early morning moment with a cup of coffee in your own balcony.

Create A Connection Between Indoor and Outdoor

Opening up your home to the outdoors makes any alfresco space appear bigger. Blur the lines by bringing pot plants inside and hanging artwork outside, so that the look and feel remains the same throughout your home. Matching colours and materials with your indoor furniture can further help to create a seamless transition from living room to balcony.

Choose light furniture for your tiny balcony. Big and heavy furniture will make it too crowded and clumsy. I have chosen the timeless wooden folding table with 2 chairs by Ikea for my own city balcony. They look good year after year.

Mix And Match Pots

Whether your goal is create a small kitchen garden with fresh herbs, a colourful blooming corner or a succulent display, mix and match pots. Don’t go overboard though! Choose a theme - it can be rustic, modern, minimalistic or vintage - what e ver you prefer. For example the pots can be in different sizes but in same colour. Or have all the pots in black in different sizes and forms. One or two terracotta pots would give some edge & twist to the combo. let me know if this all sounds a bit complicated!

I would love to have a leafy oasis with ivy covering the iron wrought rail, continuing around the balcony windows and covering the wall as well. Not yet quite there. Instead I have chosen some low maintenance options such as succulents and aloe vera. Succulents and cactus are not boring at all - they come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and colours. By the way, aloe vera produce new, smaller plants perfect for propagation. Those can be planted in separate pots.

Mood Lighting

To create a little magic on a small balcony, string up some fairy lights – they take up barely any space and provide a soft, warm glow after the sun goes down. If your balcony is exposed to moisture, remember to choose only those designed for outdoor use. I went to Ikea to look for led lighting chain in transparent but couldn’t resist a colourful lighting chain. The green, orange and coral lights were just perfect.

Enjoy your own private oasis!

Keep it light yet cosy.

Tips How To Create Coastal Decor

Coastal style is something that actually never goes out of fashion. Every spring the stores start to sell small ocean-related sculptures such as anchors, sea stars and corals. Coastal decor is a relaxed style that works perfectly well for a home by the sea or a lake. And if you’re a bit more further away from water elements, it brings back memories of sunny & salty summer days. We all love to be on vacation, and that’s the mood coastal decor brings.

When decorating a home with coastal theme be careful not to make it look kitschy. Here are some tips how to avoid that and create a stylish yet relaxed look for home.

Tips To Create Coastal Decor

Keep It Light

Bright and breezy are the things that easily come to your mind when thinking about beach life, right? So keep your home light - no heavy window treatments for example. Use mirrors to bounce light around the room. Glass is an airy material, so use it when ever possible. If you happen to have a water-related view bring it a part of your decor throug windows.

More White

There can never be too much white. That looks clean, crispy and fresh. Remember that there are lots of different tones of white. If you don’t want to have all your walls painted in white, choose from a wide range of beach colours. Sandy beige, ocean blue, stormy grey and beach glass green all look marvellous with whites.

Easy Fabrics

Natural fabrics especially linen and cotton look and feel great. You can easily wash them ever so often as needed. Actually the more you wash the better linen looks and feels. Have a couple of slipcovers, so you always have something on your couch. Coastal style is casual and summery.

Layer On Texture

As mentioned above natural materials look the best. It is good to have different textures in one space. Use linen, cotton, jute, wood, glass and metal to create an interesting and harmonious combo.

Wood

Hardwood floors, exposed beams and wooden furniture are elements that create a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. Weathered and reclaimed driftwood look more natural than dark and glossy ones.

Coastal Elements

Wall art is an important feature of any decor. Add a huge framed photo or make a gallery wall of various photos, pictures and mirrors. You can find nice beach prints here. Sprinkle pillows with nautical motifs, sculptures and other decor items with seaside vibes. Remember not to go overboard!

Casa Kristiina in Finland has a beautiful collection of nautical pieces.

Interior Designer's Tips

My Tips For Home Decor

There are three types of clients who buy interior design & decor services. One group consists of persons who know what they want but don’t have time for looking the items and make the whole package together. Then there’re clients who had an idea which style and colours they prefer, and thirdly there are people who just have a budget but no idea what to do decor wise with the space they have.

As an interior designer and decorator all those types of clients are ideal and have the same goal - beautiful & functional home. Designer has to understand client’s dreams, hopes and aspirations, and bring those alive in that specific place. Every home tells a story.

To make a home beautiful and functional I like to keep in mind the following ideas one the list below.

Mix New & Old

Trends come and go. That’s why it is not recommended to make your whole home according to the current trend, unless you have big pockets and ready to make a total makeover after a year or two. It goes also the other way - not such a good idea to stick the old times. A great rule is to mix them both and create a space with personality. Updating home with a couple of trendy pieces - a chair, small table, lamp etc - gives a nice fresh touch. The main thing is that your home is that place where you should enjoy being in.

When you hire a designer/decorator it doesn’t mean that everything in your place goes out and new ones are brought in. I always discuss with my clients which existing pieces they like to keep and which ones they want to get rid of. But I’m also clear that it’s my job to tell them if I feel it doesn’t work.

Choose Beautiful & Functional

Home, office, any space should be functional. Sometimes it is a wise decision to make a compromise and choose something over functionality if is beautiful and you really want it. If you love the look of a white sofa, but at the same time you feel it is not practical, my advice is - take it! Especially if another colour wouldn’t have the same desired effect in your space. Nowadays it is not too difficult nor time-consuming to take care of fabrics and other delicate materials.

A balance between beautiful and functional is the keyword.

Choose Sustainable

With timeless pieces and materials you can’t go wrong. Where renovations are concern, it’s especially important to pick materials that will stand the test of time.

Leather, linen, wood and stone are natural materials and just get better when they age. Home is not an exhibition hall nor a museum. it is a place for living that’s why the marks of living belong to it and only add charm and cosiness.

Be A Visionary

Consider an “unknown” artist or designer and buy based on shape, comfort and how the art or furniture works for you and your needs. The most humble objects can have the most soul and be the most beautiful thing in a room. Do not be afraid to mix high and low price points. Not everything must be precious to be important. The opposite can be said with splurging on something that you really love.

Your chosen not so well-known artist may become very well-known, and you become a visionary and trendsetter :)

Tips For Choosing A Rug

Tips For Choosing The Right Rug

First of all you should consider the colour, texture and size. It is not the easiest task to choose the right rug. Even though it is ‘only’ a thin layer on the floor it can totally change the whole atmosphere of a space. Rugs can also be pretty expensive so take your time and check these tips.

Colour Of A Rug

It is good to start with colour. Should the rug be bright red or neutral grey depends on the other colours of your space. If there’s a lot of going on already and many different colours around, a single-colour in a neutral shade would be better as it would complete your existing furnishing.

If you prefer a pattern rug with many different colours, it is often better to choose it first and after that add in furniture and accessories. Playing safe is not always the right answer when selecting a rug. Sometimes a neutral rug can make a space looking dull and - well, very neutral. while a bright coloured or boldly patterned one can really cheer up a room and make it unique.

To be honest it is not always so that a designer or decorator can automatically pick up the right rug. Often it needs to be seen on the floor in that specific place in that light to make the right decision. A good idea is to ask the store deliver two or three pieces and try them at your home, especially when the rugs has a bit bigger price tag.

Texture Of A Rug

It makes a difference what your rug is made of. The texture of a rug should give a bit of contrast to the overall atmosphere. It is always good to have different textures and layers in a space as that makes it warmer, more relaxed and cosier.

If you have a very sleek furniture, choose a rug with longer, fluffier pile. With seating in a soft fabric, a sisal rug might be the answer.

It is important to consider also the function of your room when selecting a rug. If you have pets, maybe you need to clean it more often, so the texture should be easy to clean. For elderly people or those with limited mobility, a raised pile or shag rug can be a tripping hazard.

Size Of A Rug

Quite often I have seen too small rugs placed in an area. There’re standard rug sizes and some how people are a bit of afraid choosing a larger rug and they easily go with the smaller one. Small rugs look a little bit lost and unfinished. Well, a too large rug won’t look good either.

In the living room your seating area should fit on the rug. A good and common compromise is to have the front legs of seatings on the rug, not to have a cap between them. Under a dining table, you want to be able to pull the chairs back and still have them on the rug.

Square rooms look great with square or round rugs, and rectangular rooms with rectangular rugs oriented in the same direction.

I made some mood boards for a living room with 2 existing black leather sofas and a Noguchi coffee table. That space has large windows and lots of light, so I had courage to choose a bit bolder rug options for the room. I also wanted to give the owners an option to see how the atmosphere would change with a different sofa - they promised to think about replacing the old one.

Plants For Your Bathroom

Plants For Bathroom

Have you ever thought of having a plant or two in your bathroom? If you have - very good. If not - perhaps it would be time to give it a try. I often have fresh cut flowers in my bathroom, just a tiny bouquet or a branch of eucalyptus. Small thing but cheer me up a lot. Now I want to have a plant in my bathroom. Actually this idea came from a client of mine, who said that it would be lovely to have some leafy green plants in their bathroom. Having a little greenery will certainly spice up your decor as well as help purifying the air.

Here are some tips what to consider when choosing plants for bathroom.

  1. Choosing The Place For Plants

To keep your bathroom functional and practical consider placing the plants on top of a shelf where the branches can hang down nicely. A great idea is to use hanging baskets for the plants and place them on the ceiling. You can easily adjust the height so that the basket doesn’t disturb and you don’t hit your head every time you take a shower. Small plants look nice on shelves and by the sink.

  2. Recommended Plants For Bathroom

Much of nature’s flora thrives in the low light, humid environment of a bathroom.

    1. Ivy - it can scale the walls or metal pipes framing the tub. You can even hang it up high and let the leaves droop down.

    2. Fern - it naturally grows I the outdoor equivalent of a bathroom. Low light and high humidity are the exact conditions for it. You can easily grown a beautiful plant with very little maintenance.

    3. Hoya - it has a bit thicker waxed leaves and is easy to maintain as it doesn’t need watering very often. It also blooms with small white flowers.

    4. Orchid - it is a tropical plant that flourishes in heavy, humid environments. The indoor air flow of a bathroom provides just that. A perfect place for an orchid on a bathroom windowsill.

  3. Scented Species

Fresh up your bathroom with scented plants such as gardenia and Madagascar Jasmine placing them on the windowsill.

  4. Dark Bathrooms

No worries even if your bathroom doesn’t have any windows. There are still option to place some greens there.

    1. Spider Plant - it will continually sprout new buds that you can re-pot easily. It removes impurities from the air in the moist environment.

    2. ZZ Plant - It is a tropical plant that tolerates neglect and low-light extremely well. It is also an air purifier.

Plants in your bathroom create a relaxed atmosphere with jungle vibes. I think that air purifying effect is a big plus, isn’t it?

Why Acoustic Panels?

Probably all of us have once in a while been in a room where the acoustics hasn’t been so good. You might have noticed that there’s been a kind of echo which disturbed conversation or concentration. Not a nice feeling especially if you need to work and concentrate in a place like this or if you’re having a dinner party but cannot hear properly what the people around the table are talking. In many cases this sort of noise can be reduced with special acoustic panels.

What is an acoustic panel?

Acoustic panels reduce, correct or absorb noice pollution. They are often used in restaurants, reception halls and offices, and also in homes. Panels come in different shapes, colours, sizes, fixings etc so there’re options for every taste. Sound absorbing panels can be placed on walls or ceiling to control noise and eliminate echo. They also improve sound quality.

Composed of mineral wools, foam or peat acoustic panels absorb sound waves to reduce general noise and clarify speech. The aim is not to block noise totally, just to make it more comfortable to be in that space.

When to use acoustic panels?

As mentioned above when the noise level in a space is unpleasant acoustic panels can be a solution as they help mitigate sound transfers preventing that sound travels from one end of the room to the other. Background noise for example in an open-space office can be lowered to an acceptable level. For these purposse you can choose freestanding panels, ceiling-suspended panels or wall-mounted panels.

Where to place acoustic panels?

Whether you want to limit sound transfers, reduce background noise and reverb time, it’s crucial to determine the location of the acoustic panels to achieve the best performance. Finding the ideal positioning depends on several factors, including room type, the activity of the space, existing furniture, materials in the space (glass, wood, metal)

In small spaces such as meeting rooms, designated areas, and offices, sound waves will typically first bounce against the walls as they are usually the hard surfaces closest to the sound source. As a consequence, you should be looking into using wall-mounted acoustic panels. These will help absorb the sound, reducing the number of waves that are sent back into the room.

In bigger spaces sound waves behave differently. In larger spaces, less sound energy is bouncing back into the room as the original sound sometimes drops dead before even reaching a hard element.Yet, often sound waves do hit a hard surface before dropping dead—typically the ceiling rather than the walls. In these cases, horizontal ceiling-suspended acoustic panels can help improve the sound of the space considerably. When suspended from the ceiling, horizontal panels absorb undesired sound waves. For improved acoustic performance, install the panels in different suspension heights. The air pockets between the panels will capture sound waves, preventing them from traveling even further in spaces with high ceilings.

Ecological acoustic panels

A Finnish company called Konto produces ecological acoustic panels made of peat fibre. These Konto panels stands moisture extremely well and are mould resistant. They also make a very good thermal insulation material. Konto panels are light and easy to fasten. You can have them painted with any colour you prefer or even have photos printed on them.

Why peat?

Peat has been used for different purposes including insulation for hundreds of years and is well suited for indoor use. Peat products do not affect indoor air wherefore Konto’s acoustics products are safe to use. This has been verified through tests conducted by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health. In addition to this recycling of products is easy. Panels made of peat are generating a comfortable atmosphere in a safe and soft ecological way.

I found this information in English on Konto’s website Konto.fi If you want to know more in Hungarian click here Konto-akusztika.hu

Design

Acoustic panels can be a fabulous part of any interior. It is easy to create a statement piece on a wall with the colours and shapes you prefer. For an office, store, restaurant, hotel or any business choose the colours of your brand. In a home pick up neutral tones if you want the panels to blend smoothly to the rest of the interior or be bold and use striking colours to create a statement piece.

You can also play with the forms. With squares and rectangulars is is easy and simply to create harmonious compositions. Round forms are playful and make a space interesting. Of course, the shape can like a cloud, leaf, bunny, what ever fits to your space best. Only sky is the limit what comes to the shape and colour of acoustic panels.

5 Reasons To Add Flowers In Home And Office

It is not a secret that I love flowers. There are always fresh-cut florals around my home. I am lucky that I have a florist friend who deliveries beautiful bouquets and sometimes she even takes me to the local flower market - a heaven on earth.

I know there are people - not many I hope - who don’t see the point of having flowers at home, so let me give you a few good reason why everyone needs some floral spell.

5 Reasons To Add Some Flower Power At Home & Office

  1. Flowers brighten up a room

Flowers make a beautiful finishing touch to a room. With flowers it is easy to make a hectic space feel calmer and change the feel of a room. Bright arrangements can lift the vibes of your living space, especially if the there are dark furniture or limited light. Changing the feel of a space depending on the season is also made easy through the use of flowers.

  2. Flowers make you feel & think better

On top of decreasing stress, flowers have also been reported to lift concentration levels and creativity, and increase cognitive performance. For people who work from home and want to improve their concentration, or need a creative lift, a bouquet of fresh flowers is an easy way to stimulate both. Putting them in your home office or on your desk at work is a sure fire way to reap the benefits, with bright colours or a creative arrangement even more beneficial for getting the creative juices flowing.
If calming is your aim, opt for lighter colours that fall near to each other on the colour wheel, whilst choosing blooms in bright and opposite colours will energise you.

  3. Flowers boost your mood

Scientific research has shown that flowers can genuinely boost your mood, increasing happiness and decreasing feelings of stress and anxiety. Flowers as a symbol of positivity. It’s no wonder when flowers are present at some of our happiest events like weddings and birthdays. Flowers can also trigger memories of these special events or of approaching spring and summer, a time when most of us are generally happier. There’s also a strong scientific reason why we give flowers to people who are unwell, especially in hospital. Studies have shown that patients recovering from operations in a room with flowers reported lower rates of pain and less stress and fatigue than those in rooms without flowers.

  4. Flowers clean the air

It is obvious that flowers improve the smell in a room but they can actually filter and clean the air of the room too. Some flowers such as peace lilies, gerberas and bromelias can help to remove harmful toxins from the air. They can also improve a sleep as they give off large amounts of oxygen. So it’s not only that they look fresh, they actually freshen the air as well! In addition to that the flowers that people often choose for their scents, such as roses, also help improve people’s mood and maintain a relaxed atmosphere thanks to their aromatherapeutic powers.

  5. Flowers are easy on budget

Fresh cut flowers are an easy and affordable way of turning a room round in a flash. They require absolutely no effort and you can go as big or small as you like. Even a single bloom will look great.

Let’s enjoy the beauty of flowers!

7 Easy Tips For Comfy And Productive Home Office

For most of us it is time to work at home right now due to this corona virus COVID-19. These are hard times for all small entrepreneurs and for bigger ones as well. Let’s try to survive and stay safe. A cosy & comfortable nook or corner at home will make working at home effective and pleasant.

Home office should be comfortable, functional and, of course, look good. If all these elements are in place, you will enjoy working at home and be productive. At this point when we don’t know how temporary situation this is, I don’t recommend to buy new furniture nor equipment. Use what you have at home and make some rearrangements if needed.

7 Easy Tips For Home Office

  1. Chair - choose a chair which supports your back. On the other hand a gym ball can be a good option as well. Pay attention to ergonomia. Back pain will take your energy and you loose your effectiveness.

  2. Table - or desk, if you have one. A dining table will work (if the space is otherwise not occupied for other purposes such as eating!). You need a place to spread your papers and files or at least your laptop.

  3. Light - natural light is the best. I used to work in my dining room because the table there was huge and gave me lots of space to have all my files and piles on it. I didn’t feel super comfy there, and it was because of the light - or the lack of it. Even on a sunny day the room was quite gloomy and I needed a table lamp. It gave enough light yet I easily wandered to other rooms with sunshine. Finally I decided to have a small desk and placed it by the window. The best place ever - I get the natural light and airy feeling as I can see outside.

  4. De-clutter - keep the space tidy. During the day your desk most probably get full of documents, files, notebooks, pens, technical devices and wires. At the end of the day, just clean up and re-align the things. It is so much nicer to start working next morning when the desk is tided up.

  5. Be Organised - that is almost the same as de-cluttering. Organisation goes beyond productivity—it helps you be comfortable. There's not much more frustrating than digging through piles of papers looking for one particular document, only to find that it was in another stack altogether.

  6. Wiring - check that you enough electrical plugs and extension cables to have your devices running. Nothing is as annoying than noticing there’s no place for a charger and you have to put your mobile phone in another room.

  7. Decor - last but not least comes the decor of your home office. Make it a place you enjoy to be. Add items that bring you joy. On my desk there are always a bunch of seasonal fresh cut flowers. At the moment the window sill is full of daffodils as well. There’re also a beautiful white glass vase, a miniature elephant figure and Smorking Labbit by Kid Robot. when I take my eyes of my laptop I want to see things that makes me smile or be some way inspirational.

Tips How To Hang Art On Your Wall

Walls without anything can be a bit boring. Easy and inexpensive way to fix this is to hang some pictures. As I said inexpensive I meant that the art works don’t need to be painted or photographed by the famous masters, and which you only can buy in specula actions. There are so many other options out there. You can support new artists and buy their art while there’s still a reasonable price tag on them.

One huge picture can be a real statement piece of any room, but so can be a combination of photos. It is your choice. I like to make these combos. Sometimes I mix framed photos and even wallpaper in different sizes.

Whether it is one large pieces or a combo of several pictures, think how to place it/them on your wall.

Keep in mind when hanging art on your wall

1.- Hang art on eye level

Too often you can see that people hang a piece of art too high. First of all it’s difficult to look at, secondly it seems to be there alone and not connecting with the rest of the interior. Especially if you hang just one piece of art on your wall, this tips is pretty important. So keep the visual balance.

2.- Balance the scale

You can organise the pictures first on the floor, so you can see how different combos would look like. There are, of course, several options, but one rule is to place the heavier pieces at the bottom left and the lighter pieces at the upper right with mid-sized pieces placed in between. Or, if you have one large piece and a few smaller pieces, hang the large piece toward the middle as a focal point and go from there. The main thing again is that visual balance.

3.- Salon Style

Don’t be afraid to hang art all over the wall. Literally you can cover the entire wall with a combo of photos, prints, paintings etc in different sizes and styles, or a part of the wall from ceiling to floor. I use this type hanging a lot instead of placing pieces every where I gather them together in one place. The creates a kind of drama and for sure is a feature to be noticed.

4.- Off the walls

Floating wall shelves the new gallery wall! Try layering multiple pieces for an interesting and multidimensional approach. And if you have a very large art piece, consider propping it against the wall instead of hanging it for a more relaxed and contemporary look.

5.- Large wall, large art

Another common mistake you can see is when art is just way too small for the space. Big art can be break your bank, but several smaller ones gathered together will have the same effect, and can be more affordable.

6.- Frame it

Don’t neglect the frame when thinking about your focal piece of artwork, especially in the living room; always consider that the art will serve as a wall anchor. Whether you go modern with monochromatic frames or you mix and match different vintage-style frames and picture hangers, your framing can bring just as much style and personality to a space as the artwork itself.

One great place to buy art is Etsy.
