Decorate A Tiny City Balcony

Summer is just around the corner! It’s the time of the year when we all want to be outside and enjoy the sunshine and warm weather. If you are longing for a garden oasis but lacking a backyard to turn into a dream oasis, no worries. Even a tiny balcony can be turned into a lush retreat with the right tricks. Nothing beats that early morning moment with a cup of coffee in your own balcony.

Create A Connection Between Indoor and Outdoor

Opening up your home to the outdoors makes any alfresco space appear bigger. Blur the lines by bringing pot plants inside and hanging artwork outside, so that the look and feel remains the same throughout your home. Matching colours and materials with your indoor furniture can further help to create a seamless transition from living room to balcony.

Choose light furniture for your tiny balcony. Big and heavy furniture will make it too crowded and clumsy. I have chosen the timeless wooden folding table with 2 chairs by Ikea for my own city balcony. They look good year after year.

Mix And Match Pots

Whether your goal is create a small kitchen garden with fresh herbs, a colourful blooming corner or a succulent display, mix and match pots. Don’t go overboard though! Choose a theme - it can be rustic, modern, minimalistic or vintage - what e ver you prefer. For example the pots can be in different sizes but in same colour. Or have all the pots in black in different sizes and forms. One or two terracotta pots would give some edge & twist to the combo. let me know if this all sounds a bit complicated!

I would love to have a leafy oasis with ivy covering the iron wrought rail, continuing around the balcony windows and covering the wall as well. Not yet quite there. Instead I have chosen some low maintenance options such as succulents and aloe vera. Succulents and cactus are not boring at all - they come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and colours. By the way, aloe vera produce new, smaller plants perfect for propagation. Those can be planted in separate pots.

Mood Lighting

To create a little magic on a small balcony, string up some fairy lights – they take up barely any space and provide a soft, warm glow after the sun goes down. If your balcony is exposed to moisture, remember to choose only those designed for outdoor use. I went to Ikea to look for led lighting chain in transparent but couldn’t resist a colourful lighting chain. The green, orange and coral lights were just perfect.
