Tips How To Create Coastal Decor

Coastal style is something that actually never goes out of fashion. Every spring the stores start to sell small ocean-related sculptures such as anchors, sea stars and corals. Coastal decor is a relaxed style that works perfectly well for a home by the sea or a lake. And if you’re a bit more further away from water elements, it brings back memories of sunny & salty summer days. We all love to be on vacation, and that’s the mood coastal decor brings.

When decorating a home with coastal theme be careful not to make it look kitschy. Here are some tips how to avoid that and create a stylish yet relaxed look for home.

Tips To Create Coastal Decor

Keep It Light

Bright and breezy are the things that easily come to your mind when thinking about beach life, right? So keep your home light - no heavy window treatments for example. Use mirrors to bounce light around the room. Glass is an airy material, so use it when ever possible. If you happen to have a water-related view bring it a part of your decor throug windows.

More White

There can never be too much white. That looks clean, crispy and fresh. Remember that there are lots of different tones of white. If you don’t want to have all your walls painted in white, choose from a wide range of beach colours. Sandy beige, ocean blue, stormy grey and beach glass green all look marvellous with whites.

Easy Fabrics

Natural fabrics especially linen and cotton look and feel great. You can easily wash them ever so often as needed. Actually the more you wash the better linen looks and feels. Have a couple of slipcovers, so you always have something on your couch. Coastal style is casual and summery.

Layer On Texture

As mentioned above natural materials look the best. It is good to have different textures in one space. Use linen, cotton, jute, wood, glass and metal to create an interesting and harmonious combo.

Wood

Hardwood floors, exposed beams and wooden furniture are elements that create a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. Weathered and reclaimed driftwood look more natural than dark and glossy ones.

Coastal Elements

Wall art is an important feature of any decor. Add a huge framed photo or make a gallery wall of various photos, pictures and mirrors. You can find nice beach prints here. Sprinkle pillows with nautical motifs, sculptures and other decor items with seaside vibes. Remember not to go overboard!

Casa Kristiina in Finland has a beautiful collection of nautical pieces.
